A peanut butter and jam sandwich for breakfast: a skateboarder’s day on a plate
Hayley Wilson is a skateboarder. The 22-year-old shares her day on a plate.
9.30am A peanut butter and jam sandwich and a berry smoothie on the go. I love peanut butter and jam.
12pm I eat a bagel with peanut butter and jam and drink some water with electrolytes. I’m drinking more fluids as we’re in Denver, 1600 metres above sea level, and I don’t want to get dehydrated.
2pm We arrive at a skate park and I film a trick for about 90 minutes. It is about 35 degrees, so I drink two bottles of water.
3.30pm A muesli bar and some nuts.
6pm A pork burrito with all the usual ingredients – lettuce, cheese, salsa, rice, lime, coriander – plus a lemonade.
Dr Joanna McMillan says:
Top marks for… Staying hydrated as you do indeed lose more water at higher altitude. Nuts and peanut butter are fabulous for boosting magnesium intake, providing healthy fats and plant protein, while your berry smoothie was a good choice for a meal on the go.
If you keep eating like this you’ll… Run low on nutrients including fibre, essential for gut health, calcium for bone and dental health, and the unique plant chemicals found in vegetables, fruit, wholegrains and legumes, all of which you are short on.
Why don’t you try… Swapping the white bread and bagels for wholegrain and opt for chicken, tuna, egg and/or cheese with plenty of salad veg for your lunch. Add black beans to your burrito along with a side of either salad or green veg.
Hayley Wilson stars in Queens of Concrete at the Melbourne International Film Festival, August 8-25.
