Cassius’ death sparked a national day of action, during which Mechelle called for calm and non-violence. In 2023, Mechelle began training police recruits in dealing with victims of crime. She is now assistant director of the Community Liaison Unit. On Tuesday, as the 2024 WA Australian of the Year, she addressed the Auspire Inspiring Australians’ Breakfast.
