Orlando Bloom’s ‘controversial’ former home on offer again

By Nine.com.au staff reporter

Orlando Bloom’s former Los Angeles home is for sale.

The Lord of the Rings actor, married to singer Katy Perry (who will be Down Under soon for the AFL Grand Final) painted the exterior black in 2007, which reportedly had the neighbours up in arms.

Bloom sold the property in the neighbourhood of Outpost Estates for $US3.9 million ($AU5.9 million) in 2014. It’s now back on the market for $US4.9 million ($AU7.4 million).

“When Orlando did it, it was very controversial, and now it’s pretty trendy to have a black house,” agent Samantha O’Connor of O’Connor Estates, who holds the listing alongside Claire O’Connor, tells Mansion Global.

“It does a great job camouflaging the house. Even when you’re there it doesn’t stick out from the landscape.”

Dulux Colour and Communications Manager Andrea Lucena-Orr previously told Nine that when black is used externally there “tends to be a real purpose behind the darkness”.

“Often the black becomes the framing effect for beautiful vistas or a transformative effect camouflaging into local surroundings,” she said.

“There is something beautiful about black especially against foliage and natural timbers. As black absorbs light you can actually use lighting to highlight key features and focal points which become more illuminated in that setting.”

Although the home has retained its “controversial” black façade, the listing reveals that the interiors have been “completely remodelled”.

The interior aesthetic is calming with engineered hardwood floors, earthy tones, wood-beam ceilings and windows that offer views of lush greenery.

There’s ample space to entertain with a pool, spa, terrace with barbecue and patio.

The black exterior is not the only noteworthy detail about the home. In 2009 it was raided by the infamous “Bling Ring”, a group of teens who robbed celebrity homes.

Bloom lived in the home with Aussie supermodel Kerr, who he was married to from 2010 to 2013. They welcomed son Flynn in January 2011.

The actor began dating American pop star Katy Perry in 2016, who he later proposed to in 2019. They share daughter Daisy, who they welcomed in August 2020.
