The June 15 Edition

Surveys suggest young people worldwide are becoming disengaged from politics. This is bad news for not just democracy, but for the calibre of our future leaders. Part of the reason – apart from rising social apathy – is that a politician’s life isn’t easy: the gruelling hours, the pressure to be constantly on top of policy, the loss of privacy, the verbal combat on the floors of parliament. Only a rare few are cut out for the job, and it’s clear from Jane Cadzow’s cover story today, that Max Chandler-Mather is one of them. “People in Canberra tend to dismiss Chandler-Mather as an overgrown student politician, too idealistic for his own good,” Cadzow says of the 32-year-old Greens MP for Griffith, “but I found his earnestness and optimism refreshing.” Deputy editor, Greg Callaghan
